One gangster was killed, while another sustained grievous injuries in a day-light gun battle that broke out between rival gangs in a central locality of Nashik city in north Maharashtra.
A fierce armed battle erupted between the members of Gaikwad-Kale and Dandekar gangsters at Nashik's State Bank chowk of the CIDCO area in the afternoon.
Initially, the members of the two gangs clashed with one another with iron rods and lathis. At one stage, the gangsters also exchanged fire as well.
The police identified the gangster killed in the firing as one Ashok Dandekar. One of his aides was injured severely in the firing. The injured gangster was rushed to the Nashik district civil hospital where his condition was described as "critical".
Following the gang war, the Nashik police arrested five persons, including two women. They also intensified security arrangements in and around the Nashik city to ensure against recurrence of another armed clash between the two gangs.
Though the two gangs have been at logger heads for a very long time, the investigators are trying to ascertain as to what sparked Thursday's armed battle between the members of the two gangs.
