From soaring across the UAE’s highest peaks on the world’s longest zipline to uncovering hidden pearls within oysters, Ras Al Khaimah offers a tapestry of exhilarating adventures, writes AKANKSHA DEAN

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), the oldest of the UAE’s seven emirates, has been continuously inhabited for over 7,000 years. The last to join the UAE in 1971, RAK distinguishes itself from its glamorous neighbours, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, by preserving its rich heritage, culture, and natural allure. This unique emirate, the only one to feature desert, sea, and mountains, is a thrilling playground catering to diverse interests, age groups, and levels of daring.

Elegance meets adventure

As the morning light bathed Ras Al Khaimah’s shores in a soft, golden hue, I found myself nestled in a sprawling beachfront haven aka The Cove Rotana Resort, a dream rendered in sunlit hues of luxury and tranquillity. This gorgeous enclave, where Arabian charm tangos with cultural authenticity, unfolds against the serene backdrop of Ras Al Khaimah’s coastline, marking Rotana’s enchanting debut in the emirate. The resort, stretching across 600 metres of pristine sandy beach, opens up a world where the azure whispers of the Arabian Gulf lull you into an idyllic escape. Conveniently perched near the city centre and the international airport, it serves as a perfect retreat. Upon entering, the grandiosity of the marble-clad lobby gave way to expansive gardens and twin shimmering pools. With 349 opulent rooms and an array of luxurious villas—some graced with their gentle private plunge pools—each corner exudes elegance and respite. My well-appointed hillside room felt like a cocoon of calm, a testament to the harmonious blend of contemporary comforts and traditional beauty this destination astutely promises. As the sun dipped below the horizon, I found myself contemplating the day’s adventures. Whether plunging into the resort’s fabulous pools—complete with thrilling water slides—joining in lively entertainment programmes, or taking serene dips in the azure sea, there’s a perfect balance of activity and relaxation.

On the world's longest zip line

Tomorrow promises another chapter of excitement with the world’s longest zip line at Jebel Jais, just an hour away. Adventure and tranquillity coexist seamlessly here, ensuring every moment remains unforgettable. My heart pounded louder with each passing second, nearly muting the wind’s howl through the Hajar Mountains. Atop Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak, my mouth was dry as I took in the rugged landscape. Though experienced with the Himalayas and Alps, the 1,934-metre height wasn’t the issue—it was the imminent, breakneck descent on the world’s longest zipline. The electrifying thrill coursing through my veins was a prelude to the many adventures in Ras Al Khaimah. Undoubtedly, the Jais Flight is the pinnacle of thrill-seeking adventures. Reaching speeds up to 160 km/h, this nearly three-kilometre zipline offers an unparalleled three-minute adrenaline rush as you soar over jagged peaks and deep ravines.

 Thrills & chill

Another adventure, The Jais Sledder, a low-slung track through the Hajar Mountains, is exhilarating yet manageable. At 40 km/h, you hurtle down 1,840 hairpin curves with stunning mountain and distant coastal views, enjoying the freedom to control your speed. Nestled at 1,770 metres, Camp 1770 quickly became the highlight of my UAE adventure.
