It is true that certain events in recent months have shown that the new Government means business. It had called off Foreign Secretary level talks between India and Pakistan after the Pakistani High Commissioner met separatist leaders prior to the dialogue to get their inputs. Weeks ago, the Government ordered a strike into Myanmar territory to flush out North-East militants. It has given a free hand to security and military personnel on the India-Pakistan borders to respond as strongly as is needed, without being bothered by the political repercussions, to any cross-border attack or breach of the ceasefire. This is why people had expected a more assertive India with regard to maritime security in the face of the Chinese offensive.
