A much-awaited decision on the rankers’ examination for the promotion of constables and head constables for 304 posts of sub-inspectors was announced by the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat after he met Home Minster Pritam Singh, Principal Secretary Home MH Khan, DGP BS Sidhu and other administrative and police officers.
The police department is all set to conduct the written test for direct recruitment on 364 posts of sub-inspectors in the second or third week of February. The Government has also decided to promote senior head constables and constables by creating posts in the department, it is learnt.
With this decision, the State Government has acted on the DGP’s stress on giving priority to physically agile and academically sound constables or head constables over the physically fit and experienced constables or head constables who are not academically up to the mark. As per the existing rule, constables and head constables aged up to 45 years can appear in rankers’ examination for the recruitment of posts of sub-inspectors.
However, the Government has decided to create around 1000 posts for ASI so that the experienced police officers are given equal representation in the police department. It should be mentioned here that recently, some senior head constables had met the political executives and requested them to look into the issue judiciously. According to them, senior most head constables should be made sub-inspectors, sans tests.
