The toll free number 1090 for women to register their complaints at district police control room is not functioning as desired in most districts of the state. This has also raised question mark at police’s seriousness to tackle crimes against women.
Uttarakhand Director General of Police BS Sidhu presided over a meeting with Women Security Cell in charge Mamta Vohra and others and reviewed registered cases.
In the meeting, he observed that toll free number 1090 is not operating effectively in 12 of the 13 districts. It is operating properly only in Haridwar while in the remaining districts it is not functioning as desired. In some districts, women staff are not deployed to receive calls. Sidhu expressed disappointment and directed the women security cell in charge Vohra to serve notice to those districts where toll free number is not operating effectively. It should be mentioned here that in view of increasing crimes against women in the state, the state government had established women security cell so that women can directly report crimes against them through the toll free number.
