Shopping completed, the city’s married women are eagerly waiting for the dawn to break on Friday to begin the day-long fasting by way of observing Karva Chauth. The fasting is meant for the well-being of their husbands.
Many working women are taking their day-off on Friday to observe the day with the solemnity it deserves. If the full-day leave is impossible to obtain they would return early, they say. “Nobody wants to work on Karva Chauth day. How can we miss the warmth of the occasion when our mothers-in-law lavish us with loveIJ Exchanging gifts , worshiping together at one place , chatting about each others’ attires, talking about the preparation for the day are what we do during the day aside from the ritualistic fasting,” said Anita, a working lady from the city.
It will be a day out for the foodies as many restaurants in the city have come up with different mouth-watering offers for the day.
City’s sweet sellers are also busy selling Phirni, the principal sweet item which is offered to the women by their mothers –in- law by way of reciprocating their taking full care of their beloved sons and the in-laws. The price of Phirni has also shot up, corresponding to its spiraling demand. This year, the item is being sold for Rs 300 per kg.
A day before the Karva Chauth , the ladies go to the parlors to make them look best for the day.
“I will be taking off from the work on Friday, as being on fasting it would prove difficult to cope up with pressure at the working place,” said Vandana who is working at a private firm.
Poonam, a homemaker, said the only thing she does not like about the day is not drinking water for the whole day. “I think the rituals that are followed should be a less trying. However, I would follow the tradition no matter how much I get exhausted,” she said.
