Winter's last kick in mountainous regions

Published on:

The latest spell of snowfall in the high altitude mountainous regions coupled with rainfall in the comparatively lower altitude mountainous areas has once again made the weather cold at a time when the people had started packing away their thick woolens considering the rising daytime temperatures. In the Chamoli district, since Tuesday night, it has been snowing in the higher altitude mountainous regions accompanied by rainfall in the comparatively lower altitude mountainous region. Apart from two feet snowfall registered at the snow sports destination Auli, snowfall is also being experienced at Badrinath and the Bhyundar valley of flowers among other areas of Chamoli district.

It is pertinent to mention that  the rising daytime temperature being experienced even in the mountainous areas in recent days was being viewed as an indication of the advent of summer season in the near future. Though the night time temperature had remained cool, the rising daytime temperatures caused many to pack away their heavy woolen clothing. However, the abrupt change in the weather has created cold wave type conditions in the high mountainous regions. In Joshimath, rain is being experienced in the comparatively lower altitude areas with snowfall being experienced in Auli. The world-famous snow sports destination Auli bore a different look till a few days ago bereft of snow. However, since Tuesday night about two feet of snow has fallen in Auli bringing much joy to tourists from Delhi and other places visiting the area at present. One of the tourists from Delhi, Meenakshi said that she was visiting Auli for the first time and that the snowfall had enhanced the joy of visiting such a destination. Meanwhile, the locals involved in varied tourism and snow-sports related enterprises are also happy with the snowfall. One of the locals in the tourism business, Dinesh said that had Auli received proper snowfall during the month of February, the national junior skiing championship slated to be held here would have been organised instead of being deferred. On the positive side, the local professionals are looking forward to a rise in number of tourist footfalls in this area after the fresh spell of snowfall.
