Wildlife activists oppose tomb construction inside Corbett reserve

Published on:

Wildlife activists have opposed the construction of a small tomb inside the core area of Corbett tiger reserve. The priest of a temple in the Noongarh area of Kalagarh range in Corbett expired recently and his devotees are said to have made his Samadhi near the temple which is in the core area.

Activists here complain that at a time when the authorities should be ensuring prevention of human activity in the core area of the tiger reserve, the followers of an ascetic built his tomb near the Noongarh temple in the core area of Kalagarh range in Corbett. The activists fear that this construction will increase threat of human activities which might prove detrimental to both wildlife and humans. The Corbett field director has ordered an inquiry into this development. However, activists have questioned the validity of claims made by the forest authorities about security being maintained in Corbett. “If a tomb was built within a day in the core area of Corbett without the officials knowing about it or preventing its construction, what can one say about the level of wildlife security,” said an activist wanting to remain anonymous.
