What the hole! City roads turn into commuters' nightmare

Published on:

Potholes gaping here and there right on the important roads are proving fatal with accidents, particularly involving two-wheelers and bicycles, occurring almost regularly in Dehradun.

Things become more dreadful when rainwater fill the craters, making them invisible for the bike and cycle riders. They become hellholes, said Sameer Tyagi resident of Rajpur. He further said that the patch of the roads dug up for civil works and left in that State for days at GGIC Rajpur Road is spawning mishaps.

Potholes gaping open at various places in the city are veritable death holes for the commuters as well as the pedestrians, runs the  common  refrain across the city.

“The potholed roads are proving to be an anathema for the denizens of Dehradun. They are like death-traps. We wonder what the corporation which launches big budget projects with much fanfare from time to time is doing regarding these potholes,” said Anand Rawat, resident of Kewal Vihar.

With rains now going on in full swing, the drains are being clogged and they are overflowing at many places to the woe of the people. Further, with nothing being done to ensure that the rain water passes down the drains water is getting into houses in many localities of the city. People sounded angry over the district administration being unprepared to take on the rains during the monsoon.

Residents faced inconvenience as several roads disappear under rain water after a  one  or two spells of rains, especially those around ISBT where thousands of people daily throng. The plights of areas like Dalanwala, Patelnagar, Balliwala, Ballupu and Raipur Road in the city are the same.

Meanwhile, Dehradun recorded around 20 mm rainfall by the evening on Friday.  Meteorological Centre has forecast light to moderate rain/thunderstorm at many places at many places, especially Char Dham Yatra routes on Saturday. Rather heavy rain may occur at isolated places especially in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, Nainital and Almora districts of Uttarakhand. Director of State Meteorological Centre, Anand Sharma said that few spells of rain/ thunder showers would occur on Saturday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 29 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius respectively on Saturday in Dehradun.
