The recently elected executive of the Winter Games Association of Uttarakhand (WGAU) has stated that it will elicit the assistance of the Government and other sections in order to harness the untapped potential of Uttarakhand for winter sports.
Addressing the media here on Sunday, the newly elected president of WGAU and former Indo-Tibet Border Police Force (ITBP) Deputy Inspector General SP Chamoli said that there is immense potential for winter sports in Uttarakhand where there are various locations where skiing slopes and avenues for adventure sports remain untapped.
He said that like the world famous skiing slope at Auli near Joshimath in Chamoli, there are similar sites in Chakrata, Uttarkashi and other parts of the State especially at the high altitude alpine meadows- Bugyals. However, due to varied factors like lack of vision and and other aspects, the considerable potential for winter sports remains untapped. He said that the WGAU would be approaching the State Government and various other sections seeking assistance in efforts planned to capitalise on the winter-sports potential of the as yet untapped Himalayan slopes in the state. The newly elected working president of the association, Harsh Mani Vyas also expressed similar views while also pointing out that north facing slopes in Chakrata and other places remain under snow cover and thus can be made accessible for snow sports for a longer period.
The association’s digital media in charge Vipul Dhasmana said that the association had registered its website which it expects to get up and running in the coming days. Stressing that the efforts would be focused on ensuring that the local youth benefit from encouragement to snow sports and that linkages are built, he said that the association would reached out to all those with interest including the natives of Uttarakhand presently settled in various foreign countries.
