Ways to boost polythene ban drive discussed

Dehradun District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam held a meeting with nodal officers, sector officers and supervisors of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun to discuss measures for boosting the drive to enforce the ban on polythene bags in Dehradun.

The DM stressed that the campaign would succeed only with the active participation of all sections of society. It was decided in the meeting that a special polythene eradication drive would be undertaken on Wednesday.

The DM ordered that sector officers should hold a meeting of all ward councilors, civil defense volunteers, school principals and public representatives of their areas on January 21 and earmark a place where all the polythene would be collected on the day of the drive.

The vehicles of the municipal corporation would take the polythene thus collected to the Parade Ground from the earmarked places. From Parade Ground, the polythene would be taken for recycling by the MCD. The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority would supply the gloves and bags needed for the drive.

Purushottam asked the ADM (Administration) Harak Singh Rawat to ensure that all the sector officers and ward supervisors get gloves and the bags needed for their respective areas by January 21. He said that the drive would be made successful with the help of Vyapar Mandal, students, civil defense volunteers, senior citizens, NSS and general public.

The District Magistrate said that another such drive with the help of students of public schools would be undertaken on January 25. He ordered the ADM to organise a meeting of principals of all the public schools to ensure participation of students.

The students would collect the polythene from places around their homes and schools at their school compounds from where municipal vehicles would take it for disposal. A poster removal drive too would be undertaken on February 2 to remove all the posters pasted on walls, Government buildings and public places. He asked the MCD senior city health officer to ensure that legal actions are initiated against those circulating the posters.

Purushottam set a deadline of February 29 for a polythene free city. He said that strict action would be taken against those using polythene after that date. He said that the condition of the city is deteriorating due to the menace of polythene and all efforts should be taken for ensuring a polythene free Dehradun.
