Rajendra Singh begins walk in support of Gyan Swaroop Sanand fasting for Ganga protection

Lambasting the Central Government for doing little to clean and preserve the Ganga river, the waterman of India, Rajendra Singh started his walk to Gaumukh from Haridwar on Sunday. The purpose of the walk is to spread awareness among people of Uttarakhand about the protest fast being undertaken by Gyan Swaroop Sanand to save the Ganga river. He was supported by All India Congress Committee general secretary and former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat along with a number of party workers at Har ki Paidi.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion Rajendra Singh said, "The double engine Bharatiya Janata Party government is not bothered about our national heritage like the Ganga river which is the lifeline of millions of people. The scientist turned ascetic Gyan Swaroop Sanand has been fasting since June and shall be abstaining from drinking. The demands raised by Sanand to protect the Ganga river have not been acted upon. This shows the BJP government’s apathy towards the Ganga."

Congress leader Harish Rawat also echoed the same sentiments. He criticised the BJP government for neglecting the state of the Ganga river and valid demands of Ganga’s devotees like Sanand. Rawat also blamed the Central government for the rising inflation in the country. Also referring to more local issues, Rawat also expressed concern for traders and residents of Jwalapur and Kankhal where maximum number of shops were demolished during administration’s anti encroachment drive.

It is pertinent to mention here that Rajendra Singh will be heading alone for Gaumukh traversing through major pilgrimage centres along the stretch of the Ganga and Alaknanda rivers. During his journey to Gaumukh, he will be addressing public meets to elicit support of the general public for the conservation of the Ganga river and against building dams on it's tributaries.
