Water crisis looms large in Damuwadhunga

With the onset of summer season, drinking water crisis has also started giving a tough to the citizens here. After tube-wells becoming faulty in Haldwani’s Damuwadhunga area of late, people of that region are experiencing a tough time. Though the officials of the Jal Sasthan, Haldwani, claimed that works have been started to rectify the faulty tube-wells, it has to be noted that once a tube-wells becomes dysfunctional, it takes at least a fortnight for officials to rectify a faulty tube-well.

More so, damage to the main drinking water pipe line in Haldwani’s Shishmahal area has only added to the woes of the citizens. Mention worthy, there is no scarcity of drinking water in Haldwani unlike many other parts of the region. Officials of the Jal Sasthan, Haldwani, said that while availability of the drinking water in Haldwani remains about 35 million liter per day (MlD), the demand for the same is only around 28 MlD in Haldwani. But, on account of poor drinking water distribution system, having a smooth drinking water supply has always been a cause of concern for the citizens here.

Although the Jal Sasthan has also installed tube-wells in many parts of urban as well as rural parts of Haldwani, the drinking water crisis continues to remain a cause of concern for long for the people here mainly because of about five decade old drinking water distribution system.

Meanwhile, keeping in view of the voltage problem that causes difficulty in the functioning of the tube-wells the State Finance Minister and MlA from Haldwani Assembly Constituency, Indira Haridayesh, however, claimed to have released an amount of Rs1.86 crore to install stabilisers in the tube- wells setup in Haldwani and its adjacent areas for protecting them from the high voltage of power and ensuring better drinking supply for the people. She has also asked the officials of Jal Sasthan to ensure proper use of the said amount so that better drinking water supply could be ensured to the citizens during the summer season ahead.
