Working against all odds and often in the news for their apathy towards the patients, the doctors of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital showed that they can rise up to a tough challenge.
The doctors of the ophthalmology department performed a complex surgery to restore vision of a seven- year- old girl.
The head of department ( HoD) of ophthalmology of GDMC Hospital, Dr Sushil Ojha said that the seven- year- old Ariba, daughter of Salim Siddiqui, a resident of Mehuwala, Dehradun had been brought to the hospital with complaints of diminution of vision.
The parents of the child had informed that she had been operated upon for congenital cataract at Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi when she was aged six months. “That surgery was uneventful but the lens was not implanted at the time as the eye was very small at that age,” said Dr Ojha.
On examination, the doctors found that the vision of the child was blurring due to membrane in the eye. Besides, the high power glasses were hindering the child’s normal activity.
“The child needed membrenectomy, anterior Vitrectomy with an Intra Ocular Lens implantation which had never been done before in Doon Hospital. I had done the process while at PGI Chandigarh. After the parents agreed the child was operated upon,’’ Dr Ojha said.
“The child was given topical anaesthesia, after which left eye membrenectomy and anterior Vitrectomy was done and a foldable IOL implantation was also done,” Dr Ojha informed and added that the child has started to see immediately after the surgery without using heavy glasses.
After the successful operation, the family thanked the team of the doctors and other staff members.
The principal GDMC Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta and the medical superintendent (MS), Dr K K Tamta also congratulated the doctors of ophthalmology department for the unique feat.
