Vendors demand action against those at old location

After about a year of uncertainty, many of the vendors setting up stalls in the Sunday market have finally found a permanent place to sell their products. After the shifting of Sunday Market from the road adjoining the Parade Ground near Tibetan Market to the plot near Jhanda Sahib, vendors were satisfied with the place they have been provided. However, they are asking that strict action should be taken against those still setting up stalls illegally at the old location of the Sunday market near the Lansdowne Chowk.

President of Ravivar Weekly Bazaar Kalyan Samiti, Margub Ali said, “After about one year of uncertainty we have finally found a place where we can do our business without any fear. We are about 160 to 170 vendors here, including about 35 vendors from Juta-Chappal Vikreta Samiti.”

He further added, “We have also taken a plot on rent from the Darbar Sahib managing committee so that we can provide free parking to our customers. This way there won’t be any traffic problems because of our business.”

On illegal market that is still being organised near Lansdowne chowk on Sundays he said, “We have written complaint letters several times. There should be an independent inquiry on how and why these people are still setting up their stalls illegally on the road.”

Praveen Kumar, a member of Ravivar Weekly Bazaar Kalyan Samiti said, “We are happy with the present facilities. Customer base is also good, however it will be better after strict action is taken against the vendors misusing the brand of Sunday Market and setting up stalls on the roads near Lansdowne Chowk.”

It is important to mention here that the weekly Sunday market that earlier used to set on the road near Tibetan Market and Convent of Jesus and Mary was the main reason behind traffic congestion in the core area of Dehradun city on Sundays. The authorities had earlier removed the Sunday market vendors from there and relocated them first to the Kargi Chowk and then to Sahastradhara Road before many of them shifted to the plot near Jhanda Sahib.
