Vasantotsav to showcase rare medicinal plants

Amesh (Seabuck thorn), a plant, which has myriad medicinal properties aside from having other multiple uses  will feature on the first day cover to be released on the occasion of the annual Spring Festival (Vasantotsav) slated at Raj Bhawan on March 5 and 6 . The special first day cover is being prepared by the postal department. Amesh, which grows in Uttarakhand, will feature on it.

Uttarakhand Governor Dr KK Paul has chosen this medicinal plant for the first day cover to enhance awareness among the people about its qualities and the possibilities of its commercial cultivation. This could bring income to local people, according to him.  Besides, the Governor  is taking initiatives to add newer dimensions to the annual festival.

Amesh is a shrub found naturally in the sub-alpine areas ( at an  altitude of 1800 to 3300 metres) on snowy slopes in Uttarakhand. It flowers in March and April.   In May and June, yellow /orange berries (oblong- ovoid fruits) in clusters appear on the plant which is full of vitamins, particularly with a large percentage of Vitamin C.

This juicy fruit  has its uses  too. It can be used in making juice, jam and pickle. Besides, it is used as a cure for the  problem of dandruff. Sources say that the bark of the shrub can be used for healing wounds while  the leaves can be used as fodder for  the animals. The plant enriches the soil and is also helpful in checking soil erosion in the sloping areas, sources add.

As per the directions of the Governor, some new dimensions are set to be added to the Vasantotsav this year. Arrangements are being made to encourage  participation of private (individual) nurseries in the festival.  An exhibition of rare postage stamps will be  an added attraction at Vasantotsav, Raj Bhawan sources say.
