The family members and the neighbours of Vandana Kataria erupted in joy after the Indian women hockey team won the Asia Cup under her captaincy. Scoring the maiden goal in Asia Cup as India beat Malaysia 2-0, Vandana Kataria-  hailing from Roshnabad village in Haridwar district — who also led the team in the just concluded international tournament kept her promise of making India shine in Japan where the tournament was held.

The Indian women team made it to the top in the group after it defeated China 5-4 on Sunday evening. The win made them reach the quarterfinal stage in the World Cup. With her sterling performance so far, the 23-year-old Vandana has also ensured her captaincy for  the World Cup slated for 2018.

The parents of the girl Naher Singh and Shoran Devi sounded elated after the news of the win of the Asia Cup by the women hockey team reached them. Speaking to The Pioneer, an ecstatic Naher Singh said that his daughter has not just brought laurels to the holy city but also to the country. "She assured me that this time she would come home as a winner. She  has done it. We are thankful to the Almighty and eagerly waiting for her to return,” he exclaimed.
