The Uttarakhand Viklang Khiladi Sangharsh Samiti (UVKSS) has accused the State Government of being apathetic towards handicapped sportspersons and treating them insensitively. Addressing the media here on Friday, the UVKSS patron Ravindra Jugran, international Paralympics player Prem Kumar and national level shooter Anil Kavi said that through the media, they wish to elicit the attention of the Government to the condition of the handicapped sportspersons in the State. The handicapped sportspersons of Uttarakhand have achieved laurels at the national and international levels on the basis of their own efforts and struggles without any support from the State government. Such sportspersons won medals at various competitions but till now their achievements have been ignored by the State Government. The State has not even awarded any token of honour to such medal winning sportspersons. The UVKSS office bearers pointed out that there is no specific policy for the handicapped sportspersons in the State as the government of Uttarakhand has not even acknowledged the need for a policy to encourage and assist such players in the State. Sporting talent is being destroyed in the State due to the State Government’s apathy and lack of vision. They said that they would meet the State Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and Sports minister Dinesh Aggarwal to elicit the attention of the government to these issues. A protest will also be staged at Gandhi Park on International Day of People with Disability on December 3 to protest against the protracted apathy of the State government towards the handicapped sportspersons of Uttarakhand.
