The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) and Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre (DMMC) celebrated the World Environment Day with the students of the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH) here on Tuesday.
Focusing on this this year's theme of 'Beat Plastic Pollution', USDMA officials attempted to convey this message of saying no to plastic through the voice of the NIVH students. The programme was aimed at bringing forward and motivating the special talent of the visually handicapped students to convey a strong message on controlling plastic waste in the society. Another aim of the event was to sensitise the students about the importance of disaster management and to introduce the highly vulnerable group of the society (visually challenged) to the mitigation approach also to build the capacity of the students of NIVH to get themselves prepared for any unforeseen disaster. Speaking on the occasion, the Disaster Management secretary Amit Singh Negi emphasised on the fact that disaster is a very sensitive subject and it is very important for the USDMA to create awareness among the youth of the vulnerable group, as at the time of any crisis situation they should know how to save themselves.
Around 200 officials from USDMA, NIVH and Uttarakhand Disaster Recovery Project participated in the programme along with the students. INTACH Dehradun convener lokesh Ohri also addressed the gathering . He gave examples to emphasise how seemingly small environmental friendly steps in routine life can bring big difference in the environment and life.
