A team from National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) learnt about the works undertaken by Uttarakhand Space Application Centre (USAC) following the disaster experienced on June 16-17.

USAC director Dr MM Kimothi informed the three-member NIDM team headed by its executive director Dr Satendra that the Centre and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) are regularly monitoring the glacial lakes, glaciers and landslide areas in the high Himalayas. Since the Kedarnath disaster on June 16-17 the centre had submitted its damage assessment report to the State Government.

A report on the damaged wreaked by the Mandakini river was also submitted to the Rudraprayag District Magistrate while a third report on the landslides and resulting damage in Rudraprayag will also be submitted soon to the DM. This will help the State Government assess the damage wreaked in the State, said Kimothi.

Dr Satendra said that the use of remote sensing and Geographic Information System can strengthen the disaster management mechanism. These technologies would be put to use in the field of disaster management and NIDM will work with USAC in the future on this aspect, added Satendra.
