URKU calls off Roadways strike after concrete assurance

With the promise to get their pending salaries issue resolved within three days, Uttaranchal Roadways Karmchari Union has decided to cancel its indefinite strike and work boycott.

After the order which was signed by General Manager (administration and personnel) Corporation Headquarters, Nidhi Yadav on Wednesday night, the union has decided to not go on collective work boycott, which was scheduled to start from the midnight of April 16.

Managing Director (MD) of Uttarakhand Roadways Corporation (UTC) Rajesh Kumar said, “For the time, we have received Rs two crore that went to the treasury.

Also, we have been paid Rs two crore by police department for the buses which we provided to them at the time of polling here.

Payment of Rs 2.50 crore is still pending for which we have requested them. Funds will be released as soon as we will get it.”

General Secretary of URKU Ashok Chaudhary said, “We have reached a compromise with the administration.

Our pending salary issue has been resolved; we will be paid in the next three days. All our dues will be cleared till June this year.”

It is pertinent to mention here that according to the orders signed by GM Nidhi Yadav, regular employees have started to get paid from May 14. Contractual, workshop and special category roadways employees will be paid within three days.

It is pertinent to mention here that at a time when the Char Dham Yatra has just started and summer holidays in educational institutions are imminent, the strike by roadways workers would have caused major transportation woes in the State.

Had the URKU gone on strike, the number of roadways buses plying daily would have come down from 1,000 to 200.
