To press for their demands the agitating contractual workers of Uttarakhand Purva Sainik Kalyan Nigam limited (UPNl) have decided to undertake a hunger-strike from Monday. On Mondayten workers (including five women) would sit on a hunger strike at the protest site near parade ground.
The president of the federation of UPNl contractual workers Bhavesh Jaguri told The Pioneer that the State Government is not heeding to the justified demands of thousands of contractual workers and the agitating workers are now determined to take their protest to a logical conclusion.
He said the State Government has set up a Sub ordinate services selection commission and started recruitment for the posts on which the contractual workers are deployed for last many years which is against the repeated assurances given by the State Government in the past that no contractual workers would be removed.
“On September 29, 2014, the then Minister of UPNl, Harak Singh Rawat had declared on floor of State Assembly that no worker would be removed. We want that the State Government should keep its word,’’ said Jaguri, adding that there are more than 18,000 contractual workers of UPNl and they are now determined to continue their agitation at all cost. The contractual workers are also demanding job regularisation. The federation is on strike from June 27.
