In order to expand the reach  of electricity in rural areas of mountainous parts and other rural parts of the State, Power Secretary and Uttarakhand Power Corporation limited president Umakant Panwar has sent a proposal seeking Rs2,400 crore following need base assessment under Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DUGJY) to the Central Government. The Ministry of Power, Government of India, has approved Rs1,200 crore under DUGJY to Uttarakhand.

Moreover, due to overload at 160 MVA transformer of Rishikesh based 220 KV sub-station, power- cut was imposed for two hours in rural areas of Haridwar district. UPCl spokesperson Madhusudan said that the demand for electricity in the State on Friday was 36.57 million units whereas 36.35 million units of electricity were available from the State- based hydro power units, central sectors and other sources.

UPCl received 8.95 MU from various state- based hydro power units on Thursday. Power generation has remained stalled in the Hydro Power limited Khatima (42 MW). The State received just 10.50 MU against the normal volume of 16 MU per day on Friday.  UPCl would get 4.8 MU power from Haryana in the form of power banking on Saturday while 1 MU would be received from Uttarakhand’s sugar mills. 2.4 MU power was received from various power agencies which were purchased by UPCl.  In addition to this, we would get 5.50 MU from Indian Energy Exchanges and this would help us to bridge the deficit on Saturday, it is learnt.
