Unscheduled power cuts in Garhwal, Kumaon

Published on:

Unable to cope up with the demand and supply of electricity in the State due to lower power generation through State run hydro power projects, State power department has been following unscheduled power cuts in the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of Uttarakhand.

However, department officials claimed that the department has been continuously procuring electricity from the private players in order to meet with the demand of electricity in the State.

Although State power department is continuously procuring electricity from the private electricity players, it has turned extremely difficult for the department to meet with the demand of electricity in the State.

The latest figures compiled by the State power department clearly highlighted that the demand of electricity hovers around 33 million units whereas the availability of the electricity including through State’s generation which hovers around 8-10 million units per day, is around 31 million units causing deficit of nearly one to three million units of electricity per day in the State.

Despite the fact the State power department claimed that no part of the State is under scheduled power cut except Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand, several cities including capital city have been continuously facing the brunt of power outage.

The situation is equally worst in Dehradun especially during morning hours and the problem of low voltage also increased now a days.  One of the department officials from the State power department expressed his concern that the department received 68 megawatt of electricity instead of 91 megawatt of electricity through Kalagarh hydro power project thus turned difficult for the department to meet with the demand of electricity in the State.

He further told that the department will continuously receive 10.4 million units of electricity per day till the month ends and would be proved beneficial for the department to curtail the gap between demand and electricity in the State.
