Underground power cable across Mussoorie city soon

If everything goes as per the State power department’s plan, then the web of long overhead power cables across Mussoorie would become a thing of the past in the coming days. Sources revealed that the department has been extensively working to underground power cables in the city to ensure the round the clock supply of power to the consumers as the power supply is normally disrupted due to inclement weather especially in the mountainous areas.

The supply of power is normally reported to be disrupted especially witnessing rough weather in the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of Uttarakhand. Although, instructions are given on regular intervals to officials for removing technical snags at earliest for ensuring disruption-free electricity to consumers, it takes nearly an hour for rectifying major errors. After considering the fact, the State power department has decided to underground power cables.

Sources confirmed that library Bazaar to Jhoola Ghar would be made underground in the first phase of the project and later, cable lines between Jhoola Ghar to Picture Palace would be under-grounded. The estimated cost for under-grounding power cables would be nearly Rs five crore and the work would be completed within couple of months. In an exclusive interaction with The Pioneer, Executive Engineer NS Bisht, Uttarakhand Power Corporation limited (UPCl) said that the work for undergrounding power cables has been already started and claimed that proposed work would be completed in next couple of months.

He said that reliability of power supplies would surely improve once the project completes in the near future as underground power cables were less subject to damage from severe weather conditions especially in the mountainous areas of the State besides, underground power cables poses no danger to wildlife and are less subject to thefts, illegal connections etc. Bisht further that various plans are in the pipeline for improving distribution system in Mussoorie and adjoining areas and told that strict instructions are regularly given to the department officials for rectifying the technical snags at earliest for ensuring disruption free electricity to the consumers.
