UKD withdraws support to Congress-led State Govt

The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal has withdrawn its support to the Congress-led State Government against the policy of the State Government on eligibility for domicile status and other issues supported by the UKD. Party chief Trivendra Singh Panwar headed a delegation which submitted the letter of withdrawal of support to the Uttarakhand Governor Dr Aziz Qureshi on Monday.

However, the withdrawal of support is not expected to affect the Congress-led Government in the State as the sole MlA of the UKD-Urban Development Minister Pritam Singh Panwar, who was suspended from the party has already said that he doesn’t accept the decisions taken by TS Panwar because he has been continuing on his post using unconstitutional means.

Meanwhile, TS Panwar said that the party had withdrawn its support to the State Government due to the Government’s decision to accord domicile status to all those living in Uttarakhand at the time of its creation in November 2000. The party had also said in the past that it had supported the Congress based on regional issues like making Gairsain the permanent capital of Uttarakhand. However, since the Congress has failed to deliver on any of these issues, the party organisation decided to withdraw support to the Vijay Bahuguna led Government.

The UKD chief said that the party will now focus on raising these issues at the grassroots level across the State and also gird up for the Panchayat, local bodies and lok Sabha elections to be held in the future. Though even UKD leaders acknowledge that their decision will not affect the State government, they said that they were bound to withdraw support in order to remain true to the agenda of the party. The question being asked now is whether its sole MlA and cabinet minister PS Panwar will join the Congress.
