Two incidents of suicide were reported in the State capital on Wednesday.

Police reports reveal that suicide cases have been increasing in the city in recent years. Inability to accept failure, financial loss, academic disappointments, loss in self esteem and relationship failures are among the main reasons for rising cases of suicide, said MKP (PG) College Psychology department head Anuradha Singh. Counseling might help those with suicidal tendencies overcome stress, confusion, self-doubt and pressure, she added. life in the once peaceful Dehradun appears to have become more stressful of late considering the fact that around 300 cases have been reported here in the past three years.

Two incidents of suicide were reported in which one was that of a girl shooting herself with her father’s licensed gun as she failed in her internal examination.

According to the police, around 300 suicide cases including around 100 by females have been reported since 2010 in the State capital. Fifty three suicide cases including 19 by females in 2010, 80 including 27 by females in 2011 and 91 including 34 by females in 2012 were reported in Dehradun.

Singh further said that teenagers and youth are becoming vulnerable to suicidal tendencies as they are unable to cope with the fast life and fail to meet the pressure of academic disappointments, relationships in their families or outside, disappointments in service and inability to accept failure.  Stress due to these factors might be sorted through proper counseling of the affected persons.
