Two sisters — Rajni and Rekha- who had been staying in Dehradun-based Nari Niketan over the past seven years separated from their family were handed over to their parents on Friday.

They are from Amlai in Madhya Pradesh. Before they departed for their home, they met the chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat at the Secretariat. While expressing happiness over the girls returning home after so many years, Rawat announced Rs 25, 000 as financial assistance to each of the two girls.

Rawat said that the condition of Nari Niketan is improving with the inmates being provided with all the required facilities. “Inmates of the home are making incense sticks from dry flowers. Bouquets being given to the chief minister by the visitors at the chief minister’s residence would be sent to Nari Niketan to help the inmates make incense sticks out of the dry flowers,” he said.

Social welfare additional secretary Manoj Chandran said that both the sisters had been living in the home over the past 12 years as they failed to inform them about the place they were from. “We tried our best to make them to recall their home address, but to no avail. However, we got some lead recently after the elder of the siblings Rajni told us that she was living in Amlai in Madhya Pradesh near the railway station. The social welfare department officials used the Google earth to locate their house in Amlai. After collecting necessary information from Google earth, the officials talked to their neighbours who sell medicines in Amlai. later, the officials talked to local police station there and asked them to confirm whether two girls from the area had been missing for around 12 years.

They confirmed, saying that the family to which the siblings belonged was living under the same police station area. They also informed that the family has recently shifted to Chhattisgarh. The officials collected the phone number of the father of the girls and he agreed to come to Dehradun to take back home his two daughters. The parents reached Dehradun on Friday and the siblings were handed over to them,” he added.
