Two bike-borne persons died after they were hit by a truck speeding from the opposite direction, at Jassowala, in Sahaspur on n Friday night.

The police impounded the truck but the truck driver fled. The deceased have been identified as Amit and Aadesh, resident of Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh). The deceased were admitted to a local hospital but succumbed to injuries, Vikasnagar Police Station circle officer SK Singh said. Sahaspur Police Station in-charge and sub-inspector Yashpal Singh said that the incident occurred at around 9 pm on Friday and passersby had informed police of the mishap, adding that Jassowala, mostly a deserted area, is marked as accident- prone.

First medical aid was provided to the injured and a little later, they died. The family members of the deceased were informed about the incident and bodies were handed over to them after conducting postmortem examination. The police impounded the truck that bears an Uttarakhand registered plate. A case under appropriate sections of IPC was registered against unidentified persons in Sahaspur Police Station. Teams have been formed and they have been deployed at various places to nab the absconding truck driver, he added.

Few days ago, sub-inspector DP Bahuguna who was on duty at a barricade near Panditwari police post died after a two-wheeler rammed into him. Critics opined that road accidents and subsequent deaths keep occurring in Dehradun and in the mountainous parts of the State at regular intervals.

However, the State administration seems to be indifferent, residents of Dehradun said. Deplorable condition of roads, lack of traffic sense among the vehicle users, rash or drunk driving and nonchalant traffic police are some of the reasons causing the spurt in road mishaps, they said.  Statistics reveals that on an average, one or two road accidents are reported daily from different parts of Dehradun district.
