Attending private tuitions is a trend followed by most school children and their parents. Even the students in primary school studying in classes I and II attend tuition apart from their regular classes. While this is proving profitable for teachers, this has also increased the level of stress experienced by students as after finishing their regular clases many attend the tuition classes.
When asked about what he learns in his tuition class II student Aabhas replied was that his private tutor coaches him only in the material which he learns in school. Though the private tuition boost the academics of many students helping them to understand their subjects better, there are some disadvantages which the students are facing while trying to coordinate the syllabus in the school with that of the coaching classes which causes stress and confusion for many kids.
“It is just that the school teachers don’t teach in details and finish off a chapter in a couple of days which we are made to do in detail in the coaching classes. The concept does not become clear properly if we don’t start with the basics and we suffer during the exams. I take tuition for three subjects,” said class XII student Raksha.
“I don’t feel the need for private tuition for the students on a regular basis. They can opt for it if they face difficulty in understanding certain topics and for others it is enough to revise at home what they are taught at school,” said Asha Sharma, a teacher in SGRR public school. Nina Chettri, a housewife says that her son insists on attending a private tutorial class because his friends also do so. “The lives of these kids are revolving mostly around studies all the time, they don’t find any time to indulge in any other activities which we used to enjoy during our school days.
“The level of competition is rising and the students are being burdened under the load of studies and expectations which leave them with little or no time to enjoy childhood like children are meant to,” said Arun Upadhyay who is a father of two children.
The number of private tuition classes in Dehradun is increasing day by day as such tutorials are mushrooming in almost every locality. Dehradun is often touted to be a hub of education but considering the growing number of private tutorials, it seems that the level of teaching in schools might not be up to the mark.
On the other hand, with even primary school students attending tuition the level of stress being experienced by the children is also increasing but their parents apparently do not seem to consider this a cause for concern.
