Sayara Bano of Udham Singh Nagar, who shot into national fame following her legal battle against the practice of Triple Talaq among Muslims, resulting in Supreme Court (SC) making  the practice unconstitutional, is all set to join Bharatiya Janata Party. Her formal induction into the party in the presence of senior party leaders would be held soon. The entry of Bano into BJP is expected to benefit the party which is projecting itself as a saviour of the long-suppressed Muslim women, the party leaders said.

On Friday, Bano accompanied by her father Iqbal Ahmed visited the State BJP office where she met the State party president Ajay Bahtt and State General secretary (organisation) Sanjay Kumar among others. It is learnt that during the meeting, the Triple Talaq crusader expressed her wish to join the saffron party to carry on further her struggle for the emancipation of the women from the shackles of the antediluvian practices. Welcoming her wish to join the party,   Bhatt said that her relentless struggle for the rights to Muslim women would go down in history as a glorious struggle for a noble cause.  Bano expressed happiness on SC accepting her petitions on practice of Halala and polygamy. “I am committed to  continue with my fight for right of women in the society,” she said.

Iqbal Ahmed praised the stand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue and  hailed him for his firmness in carrying things on, braving huge pressure. The BJP leaders presented a floral bouquet to Bano on the occasion.

Incidentally, Bano was the original petitioner in the case when she approach the SC in 2016, demanding that the talaq- e- biddat ( triple Talaq) pronounced by husband Rizwan Ahmed should be declared void. She in her petition also demanded that such one- sided, abrupt and irrevocable form of divorce should be declared unconstitutional as it violated the fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution of India.

The SC in a landmark ruling declared the triple talaq unconstitutional, triggering a public debate on the issue.   Besides, Bano was one of the recipients of ‘ Tilu Rauteli’ Award which was handed over to her by the chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat in a programme on Friday.
