Dedicated efforts by the tribal students from the north east studying at the Information Technology Institute for the Tribes of India (ITITI) have transformed the barren looking area along the Tons river into a lush wood. Working under the guidance of former Rajya Sabha MP Tarurn Vijay, the students sought the cooperation of the forest and horticulture departments for the tree saplings and bio-fertilisers.
Following their hard work spread across 15 years, the area has now been transformed into a patch of forest with more than 1500 trees of 27 species and a green grass football ground.
On Saturday, in the vicinity of Tons riverbed the Harela campaign- to be culminated on July 16, was launched by RSS leader and chief of environment division Gopal Arya in the presence of the former MP and cantonment board CEO Tanu Jain.
The tribal students hailing from Meghalaya and Mizoram will help plant a thousand trees with help from horticulture director Sanjay Shrivastav and the forest department.
