Uttarakhand Transport Mahasangh conducted a review meeting of the compounding rates with all transport unions of State in Rishikesh on Friday. In the meeting, it was decided that even though the reduction in compounding rates for some traffic offences has provided some relief to the unions, there are still certain aspects of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 that need revision, for which Mahasangh is planning to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and to Transport Minister Yashpal Arya.
The Mahasangh president Sudhir Rai said, “During the meeting it was decided that even though the rates have not been reduced as per our expectations, it is still better than it was before.
However, there are still two-three demands that we would like to keep in front of the CM or to the transport minister.
These demands include prohibiting police department from issuing challan to the commercial vehicles operating here. This will reduce the chances of corruption and will also save time of the passengers as well the vehicles owners.”
He further said, “In addition to that we are also going to point out our earlier demand that if a driver is found driving drunk he should be penalised, but the vehicle should not be seized.
As vehicle owners we can’t be held responsible for the driver drinking halfway towards the destination.
For this it is important for the state to do revision of the liabilities set in this matter and make sure that the citizens don’t get harassed.”
