Tourists thronged the lake city Nainital on the weekend. As usual, the arrival of a number of tourist vehicles resulted in traffic congestion in the town on Sunday. Considering the traffic jam in town, the police regulated the entry of vehicles into Nainital from Hanumangarh and Kailakhan at Bhawali and Haldwani Road. However, this did not rid the town of the traffic jam which caused major inconvenience to both the visitors and locals in Nainital. Apart from the town, other tourist attractions nearby also experienced traffic congestion on the weekend.
The State Government and local administration claim to be taking various measures to improve civic facilitation especially in population tourist destinations. However, the situation in Nainital appears to be suffering from lack of effective civic management. Sunday morning saw the policemen struggling to resolve traffic congestion at various localities of Nainital. With traffic jams affecting both the main roads and interior roads of town, even pedestrians are facing inconvenience in getting around the town on foot. As the day progressed, there were recurring traffic jams at various localities including the rickshaw stands at Mallital and Tallital, the roadways station, Bhawali Road, Jama Masjid.
In order to resolve the traffic problem in Nainital, following orders of the high court of Uttarakhand, the operation of roadways buses was shifted from the old bus station to the new bus station. However, some opine that smaller vehicles have not enabled the desired improvement to be achieved. The situation nowadays is often such that due to the taxi stand being located near the new bus station, there is major traffic disorder on the road here. The density of vehicles creates traffic jam in this locality for a considerable part of the day. Such is the situation that the transport corporation is also operating some buses from the old bus station. There is a considerable presence of smaller vehicles at the old bus station too, due to which smooth flow of traffic is yet to be facilitated here.
