Traffic pile-up on the rise, police cite staff crunch, little hope

Published on:

Traffic congestion in the city getting worse with the people coming up on the roads in increasing number with the educational institutions being closed for summer vacation, the traffic police are now having a tough time  to rise up to the occasion.

The ordeal of the commuters on the roads of the city has been taking a grim form as the cars are getting stuck bumper to bumper, the snarl taking a long time to unsnarl. The angry commuters say that the traffic police doing nothing to stop illegal parking alongside the roads in important parts of the city like where the hospitals are located are compounding their ordeal.

Things might turn worse as  the tourists bound for the famed hill stations like Mussoorie have started pouring in the city in their hordes with the vacation in the educational institutions on.

When quizzed over the pathetic state of things on the city roads, a senior police officer said that the problem is principally thanks to the staff crunch in the  traffic department. He further said that the lack of coordination involving   the municipal corporation, PWD, and several agencies which are working during the peak hours in the day is another reason behind the rising traffic pileup on the roads. He also mentioned that there is whopping  8.5 lakh vehicles plying in the city regularly.

“Add to it the vehicles coming from outside whose number is no less than 2.5 lakh and one can understand how difficult it is for us to keep the traffic movement smooth,” he said.

The police officer further said that aside from the traffic snarls plaguing the city roads, the large number of vehicles plying in the city is releasing heat which might prove hazardous for the  health of the pedestrians and the commuters alike.

“It is really a grim problem. We are trying hard to better things with whatever resources we have,” he added. It must be written here that traffic snarls have been a regular affair here.
