Traders warn stir if roadworks not completed on time

Members of the Mahanagar Vyapar Mandal of Haridwar have expressed concern over the incomplete expansion work of National Highway and the broken inroads due to railway track expansion works.

They have demanded the completion of work well before the Kanwad Mela set to begin next month and threatened a protest if the work is not completed on time.

Irked by the deplorable conditions of roads inside the city, the traders from Mahanagar Vyapar Mandal have demanded swift action on the highway broadening work which is moving at snail’s pace. Speaking to The Pioneer, the president of Mahanagar Vyapar Mandal, Sunil Sethi said, “All city residents and shop owners are upset with the regular traffic jams on internal roads of the city during weekends, festivals and fairs.

A ban should be imposed on VIP movements on weekends which happens quite often so that common people do not face the traffic snarls.”

Sethi further added that if the road works are not completed before the onset of Kanwad Mela in July-August, traders will undertake protest. The traders also demanded opening of Hill by pass road during Kanwad Mela.

The road stretch between Bhagat Singh Chowk and Laltarao bridge in Haridwar is all dug up for gas pipeline works and railway track expansion and it is the main connecting road to main city area of Haridwar.
