Dehradun police arrested three persons on Thursday allegedly involved in demanding extortion amounting Rsseven lakh from local businessman and former national level table tennis player Rohan Gupta on November 11. The accused have been identified as Rakesh Tyagi, Pramod Tyagi and Harish, said Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Kewal Khurana on Thursday.

Gupta’s father and uncle were murdered by a criminal on failing to pay the sum demanded in extortion.

Fearing anonymous call received from number 9727697819 demanding extortion of Rsseven lakh on November 28 or face death on failure to pay within eight days, Paltan Bazaar resident Gupta had registered a complaint under section 386 of IPC in the Kotwali Police Station. Acting on this complaint, Dehradun SSP had formed a team headed by Manohar Singh Rawat.

In the investigation, it was revealed that accused had called from mobile number ID of Gurgaon native Harish Jain, but the address mentioned in the ID was wrong.

On this number, a phone call was received from the number 9015967254 and ID was of Bhagirath, native Subhashnagar, Gurgaon. During questioning, Bhagirath told the police that the SIM of number 9727697819 was of Aneesh, native, New Colony Subhasnagar, Gurgaon and he was a teacher by profession.

Aneesh told that SIM was of Arun, native Shitla Colony, Gurgaon. Arun told that he got SIM from Prashant, native of lalnagar, Gurgaon, who in turn said that SIM was of Gurgaon native Mohit. Mohit in turn said that he had given this SIM to Harish on November 27 and he did

not return it.

Police was informed by the Harish’s family on December 3 that he was an alcoholic and had just left for Dehradun. Finally, Harish was arrested by the police on Wednesday noon.  During interrogation, Harish said that he had taken this SIM from Mohit to talk his girlfriend on November 27.

On November 28, his friend and Sonipath (Haryana) native Kuldeep told him to visit his friend Rakesh Tyagi’s home located at Jhitikar village. Both went there and Rakesh Tyagi told him that his friend Pramod has been working as a manager in Rohan Gupta’s shop in Dehradun and Gupta was a timid person.

All three then made a plan to call Gupta and extort Rs60 lakh from him. As per plan, Harish had handed over this SIM to Rakesh Tyagi who had demanded Rs60 lakh which Gupta heard as seven lakh. Kuldeep had also threatened and demanded the amount from Gupta. According to plan, Harish had visited Dehradun to collect money from Gupta on December 4. Based on interrogation of Harish, Rakesh Tyagi who had visited Pramod Tyagi’s home at Harrawala, Dehradun was arrested by the police along with Pramod Tyagi. Rakesh Tyagi had been jailed for

various offences in the past.
