The tradition of sacrifice

Published on:

The tradition of giving a man by way of sacrifice to goddess Barahi every year in tune with  the mythology of Bali being given to gods  for  appeasement continued for years in  the ancient shrine. Every year a man was gifted to Maa Barahi from a group of people called Kham. It  happened one year that an elderly woman refused to sacrifice her lone grandson to the goddess. She prayed for mercy following which Ma Barahi gave an option to the people to offer her blood equal to the quantity present in the body of an able-bodied man. The people still believe in the legend and go out  of their ways  to appease the  goddess.

During this festival, the people used to pelt small pebbles on one another while singing and dancing. In the beginning, the chief of four Khams along with priest worshiped Maa Barahi. It was followed by  four groups  entering the temple premises with sticks and shields called farra. They  kept revolving around the temple before two groups  started the ritual of stone pelting. The frenzied ritual continued till the  priest called them to halt. Once he got convinced that the blood shed thus was equal to the blood circulating  in the body of an average man he cried the halt. Interestingly,  the hamlet is located at the tri junction of three districts - Nainital, Almora and Champawat.
