Samajwadi Party has failed to build a consensus on fielding common candidate from Tehri lok Sabha seat in a meeting held on Friday with leaders of Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (Marxist), Janata Dal (Secular) and Janata Dal (United). The CPI and CPI (M) declared their candidates from Pauri and Tehri lok Sabha seats on Friday.
Narendra Singh Negi will contest election on CPI ticket from Pauri lok Sabha seat while CPI (M) will field Shiv Prasad Devli from Tehri lok Sabha seat. Meanwhile, SP State president Dr Satyanarayan Sachan said that the party had organised a meeting with the office leaders of CPI, CPI (M), JDU and JDS to field a common candidate from Tehri lok Sabha seat on Friday.
“In principle, we agreed that voters want alternative to BJP and Congress so we should work for defeating these parties in the lok Sabha election by fielding a common candidate. But we could not reach a consensus on fielding a common candidate from the Tehri seat,” he added. The outcome of this meeting will be shared with central leadership of SP and a final decision about selection of candidate from Tehri lok Sabha seat will be taken on March 13. He said that Avtar Singh will contest election on SP ticket from Nainital parliamentary constituency while Bhagwati Prasad will contest from Almora, Kuldeep Rawat from Pauri and Azmal Shahnawaz from Haridwar seat.
