Tehri lake residents lament Govt apathy

Published on:

The lack of security cover around the Tehri lake, spread over around 42 km, is endangering the lives of the people living around it. Over past eight years, the lake has sent over 70 people into the jaws of death. These are the figures recorded in the Government registers.

Several others might not have come to light at all. People are demanding wire fencing or parapet around the lake, but both the administration and the THDC are apathetic over this matter.

The reservoir spreads from Chinyalisaud to Ghansali. If security arrangements had been in place around the lake built in 2006 several mishaps, including the recent one near Jakh, would have been averted, said the locals.

The absence of parapet around the lake keeps causing a rising number of accidents. In spite of this, the administration and the THDC are sitting idle. From 2010 till now, the local police have registered 27 cases of death by drowning in the lake. Over 45 such cases were recorded in other revenue areas. There are many more such cases which have remained officially unrecorded.

The people living in the area like Sanjay Kumar and Ravindra Singh said that the lake is turning synonymous with death.

This is because of the apathy on the part of the administrative and the THDC officials, runs the refrain the area. They must do something to save the people from falling prey to the deathtrap, demanded the locals.
