Experts from Uttarakhand and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) participated in a seminar in Mumbai recently to discuss how technologies of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) can help in improving the socio-economic development of local population in the Himalayan region.
The Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) director general Rajendra Dobhal, Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO) founder Anil Prakash Joshi, BARC group director BS Tomar and isotopic hydrology division head Uday Kumar Sinha spoke on the issues including the problems and potential technological solutions for the same. Recharging of the springs in the Himalayan region by BARC technology was also discussed in the seminar.
Office bearers of the Uttarakhand Samajik Sanstha of Anushaktinagar- which had organised the seminar- said that lack of opportunities and infrastructure in Himalayan region had forced people of the region to migrate to earn their livelihood. Technologies which can utilise local resources for production or which can cause value addition to local produce could improve the economic and social well being of the region. Technologies developed by DAE and their spin-offs have wide industrial and societal applications. These technologies can be employed for sustained development of Himalayan region-especially the rural areas.
