Protesting against the State Government’s decision to reduce their summer vacations, the Association of Government aided College teachers has decided to boycott their work from May 15. The work boycott call could pose problems to the Higher Education department as the university examinations are currently underway.
In a recent order, the State Higher Education department had asked all the colleges affiliated with HNB Garhwal Central University to observe the summer vacations from June 1 to July 5, which means that this time the vacations of college teachers would be reduced by ten days.
The president of Garhwal University Teachers Association (GUTA) SK Tyagi told The Pioneer that the association would boycott all the works from May 15 against the decision to curtail the leaves. He said University regulation-2010 mandated that college and university teachers should get annual vacations of 8-10 weeks and further maintained that teachers would also boycott the university examinations from May 15.
There are more than 300 teachers in 13 Government aided colleges of the State. These teachers are annoyed as their counterparts in universities of the State would continue to enjoy long summer vacations while their leaves are curtailed. The reduction in vacations is also pinching the teachers of Government Degree colleges. The Federation of Uttarakhand Government Degree Colleges Teachers Association (FUGDCTA) has expressed its disappointment at the order restricting the vacations. FUGDCTA president Yatish Vashistha told The Pioneer the decision to reduce vacations was not acceptable to the teachers.
