In IT era, children gather most of the facts from internet and the role of the teacher has to be modified accordingly. Teachers need to ensure that they impart to the students skills necessary for a leadership role,” said Dr KK Paul, govenror of Uttarakhadn while addressing on the occasion of 90th Founder’s Day of Colonel Brown Cambridge School here in Dehradun on Wednesday.
Teachers are one of the most influential persons in a student’s life and thus have the important responsibility of inculcating values in children and ensuring that they do not forget their roots, whatever heights they attain in life.
The occasion was significant as this was one of the oldest schools in the region and has almost become an integral part of the history of the Doon valley, founded in March 1926 by Col and Mrs.W Brown, an Irish couple.
The school’s motto “Magna Est Veritas” (“Truth is Great”) was quite akin to one of the basic tenets of Indian culture which is “God is Truth”. He said his tenet had been an important element of Indian culture and the essence of Vedas .It had been expressed by Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi .The Governor said Swami Vivekananda, the most precious national icon, believed that education should make a child confident to face the world and develop his character.
He called upon the students to make extensive reading and updating knowledge a practice to hone their skills whatever that may be. Also ,despite all the technology available, efforts must be always made to connect with people in the real world too. Existing only in the virtual world may not allow us to understand life in the true sense. While being tech-savvy, try and communicate face to face with people to the extent that it is possible for you,” he said.
India has become too competitive and thus students find it tough to get admissions in colleges and other institutions even when they have very good marks. “The struggle for excellence has become far more difficult today. Standards of excellence are far higher. Despite this, though there is a large crowd at the bottom, there is a huge space at the top for people who have unconventional ideas and who think differently”.
