Teachers divided over dress code for female teachers

The question of dress code for female teachers in the Government schools of the State has become an issue of animated discussion among the teaching fraternity of the State. In a recent meeting on educational promotional measures held at education directorate, some of the leaders of teaching organisations raised the matter of dress code for female teachers. The meeting was also attended by senior officers of education department.

In the meeting it is learnt that the president of Rajkeeya Shikshak Sangh Karnel Singh said that some female teachers are coming to the schools wearing jeans which is not proper. The representatives of Prathemik Shikshak Sangh and Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh supported the president of RSS and demanded that a dress code for female teachers should be prepared and implemented. These representatives also raised objections on lady teachers donning flashy earrings due to which students get distracted.

Renu Bisht, a primary teacher posted in Pauri district, said that the idea of dress code for female teachers smacks of male chauvinism as only female teachers are being pointed fingers on the type of dress they are wearing. She said that she never wears jeans but the matter should be left on the wearer what he or she should wear. Harish Uniyal, a teacher in Upper primary school located in Dehradun, said that he is of view that a dress code for both male and female teachers should be implemented as a decent dress adds on the personality of a teacher. He said that teachers should act as role models for the students. A lady teacher posted in Dehradun said the leaders of teaching bodies should raise issues like regular promotion, transfer policy and implementation of Assured Career Progression plan.
