Reacting to the incident of two persons being put in a lockup by the ITI police station in Udham Singh Nagar without lodging an FIR, State DGP BS Sidhu said on Monday that a team of police officers would be deployed to conduct surprise inspection at police stations from time to time to see to it that no innocent person is unnecessarily harassed. Such teams will be formed at range level too and IG/DIG Range would depute the team members to conduct inspection in the police stations of other ranges.
Meanwhile, the in-charge of the police station, now under human right violation scanner, has been suspended. Sidhu had recently conducted surprise inspection in ITI police station, Kashipur where he found that two persons had been arrested and put in the lockup without police lodging an FIR in the police station as per the police norms. One of them is reported to be a chain- snatcher who was arrested two days ago. But flouting the norms, he was kept in the lockup without police lodging an FIR. General Diary (GD) of the police station was not filed on time too, he found to his distress.
Angry with the state of things, DGP Sidhu had suspended police station in-charge Arun Saini and Munsi Prakash Chandra. Additional SP Kamlesh Upadhyay has been directed to submit an inquiry report over the matter soon. Besides, he is learnt to have given the cops a dressing down and warned them against violating the norms.
He said that SSP appointing the in-charges of the police stations, some in-charges tend to take the SSPs for granted. “This is a bad trend and we would not brook this,” he affirmed. Putting persons in the lockups without police lodging an FIR or filing a general diary amounts to a violation of the human rights, he said, adding that the police personal deputed at police stations must be made more accountable and responsible.
