Students' union divided over inviting CM, Min to college

Members of the Students Union of Garhwal Central University, Swami Ram Tirtha campus at Badshahithaul have disagreed on calling Chief Minister Harish Rawat and Tourism Minister Dinesh Dhanai to the Student’s Union programme.

Due to this while the campus administration has refused to take the responsibility of organising the programme, some office bearers of the Student’s Union have decided to organise the programme on their own on March 25.

Earlier, all the office bearers of the Student’s Union had unanimously agreed on holding the programme on March 25-26. However, the Union became divided into two factions as soon as inviting Chief Minster Harish Rawat, Tourism Minister Dinesh Dhanai and other politicians was discussed.

As the disagreement grew, the university administration tried to facilitate agreement between both factions of the Student’s Union for some days. However, no agreement could be reached between the factions by the Tuesday deadline. An attempt was made to resolve the disagreement in the meeting of the administrative committee but with no agreement in sight, the committee dropped the plan to organise the programme.

The campus union head Pradeep Saklani said that a programme would be organised on March 25. This decision had been taken in the interests of the students, he averred. On the other hand, the Student’s Union general secretary Sunil Ramola, vice president laksmi Jugran and University representative Sunil lekhvar said that they were never against holding the Student’s Union programme. However, some people are bent upon inviting politicians for their own gains.

Politicisation of a programme organised with the students’ money prevents the students from making their presentations.  The programme will not be considered a students union event until all office bearers are in agreement, they added. Meanwhile, the campus director Professor RC Ramola said the campus administration was not in a position to organise a programme due to disagreement within the students union. Some students union office bearers are planning to organise a programme in their personal capacity, he added.
