The education department has implemented Comprehensive and Continuous Evaluation (CCE) scheme for the students of Class I to VIII in the State and decided to add it in the Confidential Report (CR) of the teachers. The CCE would have to be followed by all the Government and Government-aided schools of the State.
The Director General (DG) of school education, D Senthil Pandian said that the CCE would be done by the teachers of the same school in which they have to complete 30 per cent of syllabus in I quarter, 60 per cent syllabus in II quarter, 80 per cent in III quarter and 100 per cent of syllabus till IV quarter.
The conduction of the monthly, half yearly and annual examination would be based on it and the accordingly grading of the students would be given. The department has ordered that the total marks of all the examinations would be 150 in a year.
The concept of CCE aims to develop such an evaluation process of the students which is not based on traditional concept of taking examination and giving marks. The education department has proposed external evaluation of the activities of the school under the system of grading. These evaluations would be done by the cluster coordinators thrice in a year.
In order to implement the scheme effectively the department has also set in place an elaborate mechanism of monitoring the activities of schools. The DG has instructed the Deputy Block Education Officers (DBEOs) to ensure that they submit reports of quarterly completion of syllabus, CCE and school grading to the Joint Director primary education through their respective District Education Officers (DEOs). Pandian has said that each DBEO would visit at least 20 schools in his block during the period of written examination. The DIET mentors would also monitor all the schools of the district on different parameters. The department has fixed the responsibility of teachers, school heads, CRC, and DIET members for implementation of CCE in the schools.
In order to make teachers understand the importance of CCE the department has decided to add it in their CR which means the performance of students would have bearing on the teacher promotion and transfers. The department had earlier included learning level assessment in the CR of the teachers of Primary and Upper Primary schools of state.
