In protest against many financial discrepancies in the DAV PG College here, the members of the student’s union started a hunger strike in the college campus on Friday.
On the day, the student’s union President, Rahul Kumar, general secretary Kapil Sharma, Surveer Singh and Saurabh Sharma sat on a hunger strike. The students demanded immediate punitive action on those responsible for financial irregularities in the biggest Government college of the State.
The President of the student’s union Rahul Kumar told The Pioneer that financial irregularities worth crores of rupees have occurred in the college from last many years. “Scams have occurred in development works, library and other areas. We demand an independent audit of college accounts from the year 2008 till date. The hunger strike will continue till all our demands are accepted,’’ he said.
The students are also demanding that the college should be de-affiliated from the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna (HNB) Garhwal central university and instead should be affiliated with the Sridev Suman Uttarakhand University. The agitating students said that the college is being run on a donated land and the salaries of the college staff are paid by the state government but despite of it the college administration charges hefty fees from the students.
The representatives of the student union also objected to the practice of selection of faculty positions and other staff from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh (UP) where allegedly bribes are sought for appointment in these posts.
