Students participate in NAS

The students of different Government and private schools in the State participated in National Achievement Survey held on Monday. To assess the level of learning outcome among class X students, National Achievement Survey was held at 1040 examination centres in the State, said the director of State education department RK Kunwar on Monday. Around 45 students each from about 80 Government schools each of the 13 districts participated in the survey. The students were asked questions related to science and mathematics, English, modern Indian language (Hindi) and social science. The survey started at 10.30 am at each school.

The national achievement survey was conducted to find out the level of learning outcome among school children, he added.

Another education officer said that an accurate measure of the learning achievement of children at different stages of education can provide important insights as to whether the inputs made into the elementary education system had a beneficial effect or not. Such evidence is provided by the National Achievement Surveys (NAS) carried out by NCERT periodically.

These survey not only provides policy makers, planners, curriculum developers and other practitioners with a ‘snapshot’ of what students have learnt in core subjects, but also provides a baseline against which changes in educational standards can be monitored. The education officer said that this will ensure that all districts are not only represented but the data will be robust to reflect a decentralised picture of the quality of school education.  The NAS is not a typical school examination but a research study undertaken by NCERT to assess the health of the education system in schools based on student learning, he added.

Dehradun Chief Education officer SB Joshi said that students of 92 Government schools including 23 schools in Doiwala, 35 in Raipur, 13 in Sahaspur, eight in Vikasnagar, six in Kalsi and seven in Chakrata; participated in the survey in the district.

The survey was conducted in Government schools, Government aided schools and private schools, he said adding for the first time, the NAS to find out the level of learning outcome among school children was held in Uttarakhand. About 20 lakh students participated in this survey across the country. The performance of students was assessed in five major subjects — English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Modern Indian languages.

The major objective of conducting National Achievement Survey NAS is to know what the children in schools know and can do at different stages of elementary education, he said, adding this is for the first time that every district will be represented unlike in the past where a few districts from each State used to participate.

The results will not only help in improving the outcome of learning, but will have a positive impact on secondary education.
