A large number of students representing various Government and private schools attended the workshop on ‘Scienfun-symphony with science’ held at Kandoli (Talli) village on Monday.

The workshop was jointly organized by Society of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists (SPECS) and Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST). This workshop will continue till January 2, 2014. National Research and Development Corporation, New Delhi chairman

Dr Rajendra Dobhal inaugurated the workshop and he emphasised on developing scientific temperament among students. “Since science is present everywhere in nature, it will become easy and interesting for the students if the teachers explained science with the examples from nNature and surroundings, Dr Dobhal added.

SPECS member Dr Brij Mohan Sharma said that the objective of the workshop is to orient, sensitise, equip and catalyze for development of scientific temperament among students.

Today is the day for science in Toy making along with Communication with puppets, he added. He further said that science education is facing a problem. Pure science is becoming increasingly less popular as a subject discipline for study by the students.

One of the reasons for this is that the teaching of science has become routine and less engaging for the students. But science cannot be read or taught like history, for then it becomes very difficult to understand, he added.

Sharma said that the prime objective of the project is to develop low-cost teaching tools for a better understanding of science. This science activity camp is designed for the students of junior high school. “We plan to orient and encourage these young minds to explore science through various science based activities and fun and hence the name Scienfun. Hands-on activities will engage child with a different science topic each day, he added.
